EAL (English as an Additional Language) Print E-mail

EAL students are accepted up to the age of 13, (middle school). After that age it is essential that students function well enough in English to join a mainstream programme.

The English to Speakers of Other Languages programme caters for students who need support to understand, speak, read and write English. Each student is tested on entry and progress monitored throughout their time at I.S.N. The programme varies according to the English levels of our students, but the programme for 2009-2010 is as follows:

ISN provides teaching of the English language to those student who come into the Lower School with little or no knowledge of English. Such classes are small and are available to all students who need additional help in learning English in Grades 1 through 5.

In Grades 6, 7 and 8 middle school students are given small group tuition for English and integrated into mainstream classes as soon as they are confident to function effectively in English.

By the end of Grade 8, EAL students should be ready to meet the same academic standards as mainstream students.
