Middle School : grades 6 to 8 Print E-mail

The International School of Nice regards each student as an individual learner with particular strengths, talents, interests and aspirations, and our curriculum aims at educating the whole person.

At ISN, we value the growth of the intellectual, artistic and creative as well as the physical and emotional dimensions. In addition to our academic programs, a range of stimulating activities, both on and off campus provide opportunities for students to discover interests and life skills that go beyond the classroom. Students are thus encouraged to create, inquire, participate, perform, lead and produce, so broadening their own experience and understanding of themselves, each other, and the world we share.

The curriculum offers a balanced learning environment where students explore eight areas of study and find their strengths. All courses are subject specific although some are thematic in design. Please click here for the Guide to the curriculum for grades 6 to 10.

In grades 6-10, the curriculum is organized into eight main subject groups as shown below:

curriculum

Middle School is for students aged 11 to 14 [grades 6 to 8 (US) / Years 7 to 9 (UK)]. Students enjoy considerable integration with the High School and have full use of the science and computer laboratories, gymnasium, soccer pitch, volley and basket ball courts, theater, and the library.

The philosophy of the Middle School focuses on providing for the particular needs of this age group through a broad and balanced program which includes the semester based courses: Music, Art, Drama History, Geography, Information and Technology Literacies, and full time courses of English, French, Mathematics,  Science, PSHE and Physical Education.

Middle School students follow an academic program that is organized in the same way throughout grades 6-8. This structure allows students to develop confidence within a familiar framework and provides for the reinforcement and spiraling acquisition of skills and knowledge in all subjects. Students become increasingly autonomous learners as they progress through the Middle School and prepare for entry into High School. This very special moment is highlighted by a grade 8 graduation ceremony where students’ learning is celebrated through portfolios of exemplary work and achievement awards, shared with parents and Faculty.

In addition to its academic program, ISN values the emotional and social needs of the child. Middle School students engage in a range of activities that foster collaboration across the age ranges and result in a heightened knowledge of self and others. Activities include student-led assemblies, talks by outside speakers and special focus days arranged around a theme. Day and residential Field Trips provide opportunities for hands-on discovery and application of knowledge and are considered indispensable elements in building character developing subject knowledge and expertise and forging relationships.

Homeroom is an important part of the school day at ISN and provides students with an appropriate occasion for expressing ideas to their peer group or for the teachers to simply spend time with students, either individually or in a group. Close contact is maintained between the homeroom teacher and parents as a means of ensuring that students are at all times fully supported.
