Pre-IB Diploma years

Grades 9 and 10 are called the pre-IB Diploma years, and ISN offers students a wide range of learning opportunities. During this two-year period, high school students complete core Pre-IB courses and the IGCSE courses.

IGCSEs are a set of high-profile qualifications with an excellent reputation that provides a broad curriculum suitable for international schools.

Designed to encourage high academic standards, the two-year programme features subject-specific courses, each leading to a final external examination at the end of Grade 10.

To take into account students' ability levels, strengths and interests, some subjects offer a choice between core and extended examination options.

At ISN, we feel that rigorous external examinations provide students with valuable experience for the IB DP.

Grade 9 and 10 subjects

The courses are carefully chosen to thoroughly provide the foundation students need for the IB Diploma Programme. As indicated below, students must follow some core courses but also start to make choices that shape their academic profile.

The following subjects are offered in Grades 9 and 10 as mandatory:

  • English* with Literature* for the most proficient students
  • French* with the opportunity to transfer across three groups: beginner, intermediate and francophone
  • Mathematics* with the opportunity to transfer across three groups: core, extended and additional
  • Coordinated Science* – Physics, Chemistry and Biology – all three sciences leading to double award certificates
  • Physical Education with optional IGCSE exam/certificate
  • Homeroom/PSHE in addition to daily morning homeroom

In both Grades 9 and 10, students choose between one of three options for each non-mandatory IGCSE subject selection.
