Excellence beyond academics: high performance learning
Michelle van Buuren and Nicole Booth
What is high performance learning (HPL)
High Performance Learning (HPL) is a research-informed educational framework designed to elevate achievement through the development of advanced cognitive performance characteristics and learner attributes.
Rejecting the notion of fixed ability, HPL assumes that all students can attain high academic standards when provided with the right strategies and support. The framework encourages metacognition, curiosity, perseverance, and self-belief, which are traits essential to both academic and lifelong success.
At ISN Nice, HPL is embedded throughout the curriculum, ensuring a consistent focus on growth mindset development from Early Years through to the IB Diploma years.

HPL + IB: A dynamic educational model
As an IB World School, ISN Nice finds strong alignment between the HPL philosophy and the International Baccalaureate learner profile. Both encourage inquiry, reflection, intercultural understanding, and holistic learning.
HPL enhances the IB model by cultivating resilience, risk-taking, and ethical decision-making. In practice, this model supports students to become collaborators, researchers, and solution-seekers, applying knowledge meaningfully within a global context.
These attributes empower learners to flourish across the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and IB Diploma Programme (DP).

The agile learner in practice
The agile learner in practice
Agility in learning is a cultivated skill at ISN. Across school stages, students are invited to engage critically with their learning, build empathy, and grow in self-awareness.
-
Primary learners explore complex themes through inquiry-based projects
-
Middle school students undertake interdisciplinary investigations and service learning
-
IB students demonstrate autonomy and reflective thinking through the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge
These experiences encourage cognitive flexibility, ethical awareness, and personal responsibility. These are key outcomes of the HPL approach.

France’s only HPL accredited school
ISN Nice holds the distinction of being the only school in France awarded the High Performance Learning World Class School status. Granted by High Performance Learning UK, this prestigious accreditation affirms a whole-school culture centred on high expectations, professional development, and cognitive growth.
“HPL has helped us rethink how we engage students with mathematical concepts, focusing on their confidence and perseverance. It’s a game-changer for how we teach” - Santanu Bhowmik, IB Coordinator - ISN Nice
This recognition reflects ISN’s unwavering commitment to academic integrity, inclusivity, and learner well-being.

"Being part of the HPL drive team has shown me the impact of a growth mindset and the power of embracing challenges. It’s encouraged me to think beyond my limits and support others in doing the same, which has strengthened my confidence and resilience. HPL has truly shaped how I approach learning and personal growth, both in and out of the classroom." - ISN student, Mey (Gr11)
