Globeducate Academic Olympics

We are proud that five ISN Nice Middle School students have been selected to attend the Globeducate Academic Olympics in Milan this November!

Each year, this event brings together students aged 13 to 14, to compete in mixed teams on topics set out to challenge thinking and communication skills, knowledge and logic, and team skills. This year the event is hosted by ICS Milan and Bilingual European School.

Here is what our students have to say about the upcoming trip:

"I am very excited to be going on this trip! I think it's a great opportunity to learn new things and get some new experiences. I have never done this before so I'm glad to be taking part in this." Annabelle Rosa.

“I am very excited to go to Milan for the Academic Olympics competition and I believe it will be a journey that will help me discover different cultures and opportunities.” Michelangelo Zago.

“I enjoyed a short visit to Milan of which I remember very little so I’m excited to discover the city again!  I think first and foremost that this competition is a great opportunity for me to show what I can do and work on my teamwork skills.  I simply hope that this will be a great experience and I will have loads of fun on my journey.” Sofie Salen

“Since the time I've been informed that I am going to Milan for the Academic  Olympics trip, I have been looking forward to it every day. I am really looking forward to competing with other schools alongside my friends, hoping that we win and I can't help but imagine how much fun and knowledge we are going to gain.  I have been to Milan, however, I'm sure it's going to be a different experience when I go with my friends.  I can't wait to go!Jinhong Yu

“Last year I was thinking about participating in a Mathematics Olympics but because of various reasons I wasn’t able to do it. Therefore getting an opportunity to participate in the Globeducate Academic Olympics will be nice and useful. I’m not going there to see a result, of course that would be nice too, but I’m going there for the experience; to see how it happens, how it works and overall meet some new people.” Mark Sinkin

With more than 100 students from 18 schools coming from across the Globeducate network of 10 countries, the students will use English as the common language and can look forward to a creative and truly international experience with their peers. “The Academic Olympics are an incredible opportunity for Globeducate students not only to see themselves as members of a thriving international community working together to shape the world but also to foster the exchange of perspectives, ideas and transformative experiences,” said Mauro Spicci and John Nicholls, Co-Directors of the Bilingual European School in Milan.

Schools include nine schools from Spain, five schools from France, and schools from Italy and the UK, with students accompanied by a teacher.  A huge part of this experience will also be these young students gaining independence, travelling to somewhere that is possibly new, and staying with a family they have never met before, in Milan. The social skills and confidence gained by this learning adventure will leave a lasting impact on both the host and visiting student.

This year students will work on projects with the theme of Good Health and Wellbeing, with an approach based on design thinking and with projects that combine STEAM with Milanese history as well as a scavenger hunt around the city centre, using coordinates. Students will also visit the sites of iconic Milanese brands such as Fondazione Prada and Fondazione Pirelli.  Each task will challenge each team in unique ways and students will go home each night with exciting stories to share with their host families.

Executive Principal ICS Milan, Antonia Giovanazzi, said, “After hosting this key event in the Globeducate calendar online during the pandemic, the excitement to host students from all over our network is tangible – we know that new friendships will be formed and that we will all have so much to learn from coming together. Milan is such a vibrant and dynamic cosmopolitan city to spend time in. This year we are thrilled to be joining forces with our colleagues and students from Bilingual European School in Milan. This will be one of the great highlights of the Globeducate calendar in Milan and we cannot wait for it to begin!
