Working Towards Zero Waste

Every year, millions of tons of materials end up in landfills, and unfortunately this includes many reusable items, such as clothing, toys, furniture, equipment and electronic devices. Instead of throwing these items away, ISN Nice’s Planet Patrol (our Eco council) encouraged students, teachers and parents to donate their unwanted items for reuse.

Ms. Marion Tissier, ISN CAS Coordinator, and Planet Patrol/CAS students were chosen to be ISN Nice’s ‘exemplary citizens’ (nos héros du quotidien in French) in December. They worked hard to encourage our community to donate items instead of throwing them away, resulting in reusable items being donated to communities in need, instead of being thrown in landfills.

They chose the following nonprofit organisations for donations:

  • Clothing donations went to Les Centres d’Accueil de Demandeurs d’Asile (CADA) de Nice that offer asylum seekers a place to stay while their application for refugee status are being studied.
  • School furniture donations (desks, chairs, filing cabinets, etc.) went to “La Recyclerie des Moulins”, winners of the European “Zero Pollution” Award.

This was a great opportunity to showcase how we are working towards Eco-School status, and to remind the ISN Nice community of the 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
