Dear ISN Parents,
I hope that all of you had a chance to relax and enjoy quality time with your children during the midterm break last week. As we begin the month of March you will quickly see that there are many events and activities in the upcoming weeks. The wealth of activities reflects the holistic education that we, as an IB World School, are giving to our students.
In a recent study on how students define the success of a school, a couple of Cambridge professors asked students if they would say that success should be defined by exam results or something much broader. Surprisingly or not, the researchers found that “exam results did not feature in their responses. Having passionate teachers, feeling supported, and being prepared for the future were the most popular themes.” One of students surveyed stated, “If students are smart and succeeding academically, but are emotionally unhappy, that is not a successful school.” At ISN, our holistic approach to student learning helps the students to understand the world in which we live and to engage effectively with others, and we encourage them to reflect regularly on their own learning and to celebrate, learn about, and embrace each other’s cultural differences.
This coming week, an event that will be challenging and engaging for our middle and high school students will be the visit of the world-renowned photojournalist Nick Danziger. Over the past 15 years, Nick has come on numerous occasions to speak to our school community about his work, particularly with respect to his documentation of the progress on the UN Millennium Goals to eradicate poverty, and I am sure that the students will be fascinated and thoroughly engaged as he meets with them again this coming Friday.
Wishing all of you a restful and enjoyable weekend!
David Johnson, ISN Director
